The ATX and mATX versions look exactly the same as any other commercial motherboards.

Are embedded motherboards just a fancy way of saying OEM motherboards? They don't seem to be available to most consumers.

If you look at those boards you will see a lot of components and ports that companies can use but would be wasted on consumers. Many COM ports for communicating with machinery and mini pci express ports and such.

I see, so that's why embedded motherboards are often listed under/as Industrial Motherboards. According to my research, they are also built with a higher standard to withstand factory and high-temperature conditions.

I was interested in them because I initially thought they would be cheaper.

Yea definitely not cheaper if you are looking at regular motherboards. There are motherboards with chips soldered to them that are generally also called embedded boards. Chips like atoms and low voltage celerons.
