Hi there
I just put an Cooler Master 280l 2x140mm fan water cooler. Im using mx-4 thermal paste. My procesor is i7-4790k and MSI gaming 5 motherboard. I have JetFlo fans attached to my 280l as outtakes. I use a well wentilated Corsair 540 air case. When I turn on my pc and just leave it at windows start screen my temps are 30-31c. when I set my CPU to stay at 4.40GHz and just leave it it goes to 35c. The question is what fan speeds should i use to test my idle temps or should i leave it at smart control. Just for fun i tried to set my fans at 100% at idle temps and it had no emprovement and stayed at 30-31c. Is that normal? What do you guys say about my idle temps? Are they good? I want to test my load temps. What stress test do you sudgest?

Solution
Your idle temperatures are absolutely fine at stock speed and at 4.4Ghz, and unless the fans are too noisy, I'd leave them on Smart Control.

Prime95 is the usual recommendation for stress testing. Run a Small FFTs Torture Test across all eight processor threads to push the usage to 100%, then take a look at the temperature.

Solution
This seems to be a problem that a fair few i7-4790k owners are having me included. Originally my temps idles at 30 to 34 degrees. I have a h100i Watercooler. After getting frustrated and going on the ROG forums (my motherboard is a ROG Asus MAximus Hero VII) I learned that playing with the bios sorted the idle temps out.. I now idle mid 20's and in Prime95 i get mid to high 60's at 100% torture. Not sure exactly why but see other posts on here as you should be running a bit cooler. My H100i is whisper quiet and only makes a sound when i am torture testing the CPU. Yours should be a little better than mine.. also dependant on Ambient... mine is around 20 to 22 degrees.

I also have a Corsair Air 540 (great case) and used MX-4. Use Aida64 and Prime95 with Core Temp and Real Temp with CPUz
