Hello all,

I'm building a budget build (let's say about $390) for a friend who will literally only be playing the Sims 3 and 4 and general PC usage, like streaming TV etc. Just to clarify, this budget doesn't include the $260 I've put aside for a monitor and Windows license.

Would it be better to choose a CPU and older card or the new A10 and let the GPU handle it? For around my budget I can get:

1. A10-7700K & 8GB 1600 RAM
or
2. Athlon II X4 740 & GTX 470 & 4GB RAM

I'm not too familiar with these newer APU but should I assume that it will be capable of running the game on medium settings? She won't notice unless there's serious lag / FPS drops below 15-20 lol

Thanks in advance!

7700K and 7850K are almost exactly the same in terms of graphics.

Here's a video of the 7850K

I suggest that you should play it safe and take the option 1 w/ the better CPU. If Sims 4 ends up unplayable w/ the integrated graphics, then you can always save some cash for a video card.

Besides, think about a few years from now. The 7700K will probably still be serviceable by that time, and the X4 740 and the GTX470 will be truly obsolete.

You make a fair point re: adding a card in later. And if it runs (the bloated) Sims 3 smoothly then it seems it will run Sims 4 since that's optimised for low-end computers.

I went with a cheaper A10 Richland APU since she really won't be playing anything else. Thanks for your suggestion!
