Intel and AMD components are compatible at the graphics (GPU) level, i.e. you can buy an Intel motherboard with an Intel processor and run an AMD Radeon graphics card, like your i5 and an R9 280. It's vice-versa with AMD. You get an AMD board with an AMD processor and if it allows it, you could run an NVIDIA card, like an FX-6300 with a GTX 770. When you get into multi graphic card arrays (CrossfireX and SLI) there is a distinction: SLI is NVIDIA cards only and CrossFireX is for AMD Radeon cards only. If you aren't sure, check the compatibility of your motherboard with AMD parts. Some only can do SLI, some only do CrossFireX, some can do both.
