3 R9 280's is the best performance for the buck I could find. if they really do get 2.60X scaling then thats almost titan Z Performance for $600. Should I go for it?

What are you trying to do? 2-way crossfire has compatibility issues and 3-way is worse. If you're using a 1080p than there is no need for that performance and if your playing higher res you'll want more vram than the 2gb 280's.

Future proofing is never worth it with pcs, better to just upgrade more regularly.

If you're playing at 1080p on a 60hz monitor just get a R9 290 or 780, or 290x/780ti if you want a bit more future proofing (really won't make much difference though). A 60 hz monitor means you're not going to see anything over 60 fps anyway so there is no need to try get Titan Z performance. Also Nvidea should be officially announcing some of their 900 series cards in a few days so you'll probably see some price drops.
