Hi,
I use WD20EFRX 2TB as my OS HDD and another one as backup HDD for home use because I read somewhere they are much more reliable than the regular HDD drives. Recently a technician told me that these drives are less reliable than regular HDD's if used for home use, because they aren't meant to be turned on and off occasionally. Is this true ?

Solution
Hey eyal20122013. The technician is both right and not at the same time. The drive is tested and made to withstand running 24x7 in systems and is designed specifically to be used in NAS and RAID environments, but that doesn't make it less reliable as an HDD. You shouldn't have a problem using it as a main or secondary storage drive although we do however have specific models for those types of usage.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Boogieman,
Then for home use where I turn on and off my computer every few hours (and also sleeping mode is enabled), would the red series be less or more reliable than the blue or green series for this kind of use ? what would you recommend for this kind of use with high reliability ?

Reliability isn't the factor here. The Red is a very reliable drive, but it's overkill for home use, as a lot of the money you spend on it is going towards features you will never use. Also, turning it on and off won't hurt it. It's designed to withstand 24/7 use, but that doesn't mean that it will be harmed by a less intense workload.

I would get a Blue drive for personal computing. Cheap, reliable, gets the job done. What more could you ask of a hard drive?

Well from what I understood from your first post, you already have the 2 WD Red drives so if you're thinking of switching to another model just because those are made for NAS and RAID - there's no need for that, they'll do the job. But if you want a new HDD for your OS, I'd go for the WD Blue drive as DonQuixoteMC suggested. It's a 7200RPM drive, designed for general usage - simple and reliable. As for backup I'd always recommend an external drive for that, but that depends solely on your preference.
You can take a closer look at the WD Blue drive here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=770

Yeah, good clarification. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. You have nothing to worry about with your current hard-drive, but in the future, you would be fine getting Blue or Green drives.

Here's some proof of how reliable the WD RED 2Tb drives are.
