I would remove the hard drive, use an external USB HDD docking station and connect that docking station to a fully functioning computer. Then copy the files off the external disk.

Most laptops don't have tamper seals on the screws required to access the hard drive or RAM. What model IBM laptop is it so that we can look up the documentation?

Hello there,

I've seen users getting good results with a bootable Ubuntu USB pen drive or Ubuntu live CD.
You don't need to install anything on your machine and if your HDD is in good health you should be able to access your drive and copy your data

Hope that helps

Here is the hardware maintenance manual. It is well illustrated and has step by step instructions for removing the hard drive.

Here is the users guide which has instructions starting on page 29. It only has drawings rather than pictures.
