Hello community,

This is my current rig:

Mobo: ASrock 990fx Extreme3
Cpu: AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE
Ram: G.Skill DDR3 2x4GB 1600 CL9 RipjawsX
Gpu: Sapphire Radeon HD7950 3072mb Vapor-x

I'm considering upgrading cpu in 2-3 weeks time and can't decide between amd fx 8370(or E) and 8350.

I'm mostly gaming on this computer and the reason for upgrade is the incoming WoW expansion, I want it to run a bit more smoothly on the higher settings.

Just to give You a crude estimate how much these two cost in my country(Poland):
8370: 249$
8350: 200$

Is 8370 really worth spending 50$ more, or perhaps I should be looking at some cpu other than these 2?

Thanks for your replies,

Best regards

No it is not worth it at all. There will be virtually no difference in performance in games.

No, not worth it at all, get a CM Hyper 212 Evo cooler and overclock the 8350 if you want more.

I just swapped from a 975 to a 8350, yesterday actually..:)

The 8350 at stock clocks performs about the same as the 975 did overclocked, in SINGLE threaded applications. I reasonably expect a 20-30% gain in overclocked versus overclocked benchmarks, depending on how well I did in the chip lottery.

In MULTI threaded benchmarks, the 8350 wins hands down, obviously. MOAR CORES!

The 8370 is a 8350 that binned well, so they clocked it up by default. The E models, as I understand it, are lower TDP versions.

The 8350 makes a good upgrade and draws the same power as your 965. Remember to set the bios back to default/auto before the chip swap, so it doesn't try to boot at whatever OC you have your 965 at. You will not see massive OMG improvements over the 965 benchmarks, but in day to day use and any significant multitasking, you will notice. In multi threaded games, you will notice. MWO will use at least 6 cores, I see activity on all 8. Star Citizen works all 8 cores, as examples of Cryengine multi threaded games that make the upgrade worth it.

However if you are looking for some amazing shout for joy performance increase, it won't be there. Solid upgrade, not amazing. 8350 best value, TL : DR version.

I would personally get an 8320 as, again, it is the same CPU as the 8350, just with a bit worse binning. It EASILY overclocks past stock 8350 performance and usually is $50 less than an 8350 or more.

I would NOT try to OC an FX 8 core on that motherboard. It has a 4+1 phase VRU. I've used that board before and it is OK for overclocking an x6 CPU, and it can handle an x8 CPU at stock.

I would go with the 8320 or 8350 and overclock it on a better motherboard.

a note on teh 8320 vs 8350 vd 8370.

The best 8350s get upclocked at teh factory and binned as 8370s (the real pinnacle ones are upbinned to 9350s), while 8320s are downbinned. What this means is there are fewer really super gems among 8350s - the gems were upbinned already. So you aren't likely to get any sort of extreme overclock in an 8350 that's stable.

the 4+1 phase means you shouldn't push voltage. Since you won't get a stable extreme overclock, you should be able to overclock the 8350 on that motherboard as long as you arent pushing volts very hard (or even just leave it stock voltage.

Thanks for replies guys.

I guess I will go with 8350 and maybe some time in the future upgrade mobo and overclock it. Im not so much focused on overclocking and doing it on my 965 was even a pain for me, so I wanted a new cpu to be stable and running good on stock settings.

You won't notice any real difference in games between the 8370 and 8350. I'd get the 8350 and put the money saved into a new GPU, get an R9 280X or 290X if you can stretch. Or maybe even just the GPU as that is what really impacts gaming performance
