L.S.

I have this old AGP system running Windows 7. The current VGA-Adapter is not supported and I would like to figure out which graphics card suits best.

Win 7 x86
p4 @ 2.8ghz (single core)
2gb RAM pc3200 400mhz dual channel g.skill
Ati Radeon r92, Radeon 9200 (not supported WDDM, runs on xp drivers, bluescreens everywhere)

My main question is about the importance of directx versions supported by the card. I found an used 7600gt 512mb and a new 3450 512mb for about the same price. The latter supports dx10.1. How much of a importance is this in a retro system? I mean, would it be wiser to get a new fx5500 256mb for 30 bucks, supporting just dx9 for the older games I intend to play on it? Or a dx10 card with newer options like hd playback etc. I'm not asking whether I should upgrade this old system but the thing is I got it running, all is well, but the only thing holding it back is a decent vga card and there is so much to choose from.

Any other suggested AGP cards, I welcome.

As reference another retro built (HD3600, 1gb ram, p4@2,8, winXP) is capable at least of Warcraft 3 full settings up to the Sims 3 default settings. I would like to see something like that or possibly even more for the least amount of coins. Some Warcraft 3 Home-LAN would be sweet?

Thanks in advance.

Both AMD and NVidia have stopped building AGP cards; NVidia with their 8 Generation old 7xxx GS series and AMD with their 4 generation old HD4xxx series. The best card you're going to find is going to be either the HD4650 or HD3850 from the AMD side. Since the system is running Windows 7, I'd probably recommend getting a card that does support DX10 on the off chance you do decide to play a game that also supports DX10. I'd probably see if you could find an old AGP HD2600Pro as the two later cards are probably a bit more expensive.

The FX 5500 was never that great of a card in fact the older GeForce 4 ti 4200 was actually faster most of the time.

Maybe get your hands on an old 9800 pro(but still DX 9). the X850XT was also a great card for the time.

It is quite a tall order to get a Windows 7 ready card in AGP now days. The AMD HD 2XXX and newer series support it.

Thank you for your replies. It seems for this system the way to go is the 3450 new (even though I've always preferred Nvidia). I forgot to mention the system was a gift (and by now I understand why). Spending 50eu (65 bucks) making it work should be well worth it. Delivery can take a while but when I get it running I'll post the outcome.

about to order (similar to junkeymonkey's suggestion):

Much obliged.
