I have 16BG of RAM (2x8), is going to 24GB (2x8 + 2x4) ok instead of 32GB?

Does it make sense to save money and simply go to 24GB from 16GB? I don't really want to spend the money to go to 32GB. I'd end up with 2 8BG sticks and 2 4GB sticks. All the same G.Skill model, just using smaller ones for the second set.

Yeah you can have 2x8 and 2x4 gb of ram in the same machine. Best to use the same speed and timings, even better to use same brand.

As far as going 24 or 32gb of ram, that is entirly on what your needs are and how bad 16gb of ram is crippling you. If you are not using more then 10gb of ram as is, then an upgrade will not help you one single bit.

You can try, no guarantees the sticks will play together, any time you mix sets of DRAM - even the same exact sets, it can be and often is problematic. If you try and have problems, can often get them to play with timing/voltage adjustments. If you try and have problems, give me a shout ;)

Thanks folks! The 8GB set I am considering is simply the 8GB version of the 16GB set I already have. Same timings and speed. The main reason I've been considering this is I've been considering adding a RAM drive. Of course I'm not sure a RAM drive is worth the cost of another 8GB, but I suspect I'd enjoy having it.

One concern I had in regards to going to 24GB instead of 32GB was that the system would have to work a little harder because the sticks wouldn't all be the same size. I believe there was a time when Windows didn't like that. I assume that's not an issue and it wasn't a worry. Thank again!
