USB Device Not Recognized when direct to computer, works through hub

I have a rather odd problem indeed. My phone, a Samsung Galaxy S III (SGH-i747), will not speak to my computer when the two are directly connected via either one of my USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 ports. However, if I put a USB (2.0) hub in the middle, they seem to be willing to talk through an intermediary.

I have tried uninstalling the Samsung phone drivers and uninstalling all of my USB controllers through Device Manager. I also tried reinstalling my chipset drivers, though I'm not sure that really did anything. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T440p (9 months old so still under warranty).

I don't currently have another Samsung phone to try, but I will later. I'll report back once I've tested that one. My phone works fine directly connecting to another Windows 7 PC in the house. The phone even used to work fine on this computer. All other devices seem to work flawlessly when connected directly to any of my computer's USB ports.

Any ideas short of reinstalling the OS? Thanks!

Hmm... I just rebooted into a Linux live CD, and I got the same thing. Works with the hub, but not without. I tried reflashing the BIOS, but that didn't seem to work either. I guess all I've got left is Lenovo technical support.
