Hello, my PC keeps randomly shutting down. It'll sometimes run for several hours then shut down, or it'll shut down as soon as you log into windows.

Asus z68pro mobo
8GB Vengeance ram (dual channel)
I5 2500k OCd to 4.7ghz (auto tune)
Corsair H70 liquid cooler
Thortech thunderbolt 1000w PS
GTX580
60 GB crucial SSD (OS)
2 1TB Western digital hard drives

My CPU temps at idle on the monitoring system from the Desktop are 30*C, and 23*C on the mobo. All fans work. When it shuts down and restarts the monitor in the bios reads 43* C CPU temp. Not sure what's going on. It just started doing this this week. I cleaned the PC out, it was very dirty, thought it was a heat issue, put it back together and it ran fine for a couple of hours. Turned it on today and go my new internet setup in about 30 minutes and then it started acting up again. I'll log into windows and it'll shut down. Im able to sit in the bios screen without it shutting down.

Well, it could be an odd Windows bug but I suspect there's something in hardware that just isn't being hit in the BIOS where you're really not doing much. Are all the cables secure and the RAM properly seated? Let's try some diagnostics

I'm not sure what doens't work in safe mode. If you need to go to normal mode to burn it that's fine (you'll need to reboot again and boot from it to run that test anyway). Memtest will loop around until you stop it. Once you're reasonably confident you've gotten clear results from memtest (errors right away, or none after a while) you might have an answer there. If not, try running safe mode overnight a couple of nights to observe if it has shut down overnight in the morning.

well i ran the test for awhile and the memory seemed to pass. i loaded up windows and let it sit all night. no problems. and ive been on it today for about 1.5 hours now with no crashes... im stumped

When it shuts down, does it go *poof* out like a light bulb? That could be a power problem, obfuscated by the fact it's stable in the BIOS. It could be the motherboard too. With those cases the only way to troubleshoot is to test with different parts. There are issues in Windows that can cause such a thing though which is why I suggested testing in safe mode. If the issue recurs, give it an extended run in safe mode before you worry about serious hardware failures.

At least we've established that memory probably isn't to blame, so we can leave aside that one common culprit.

since i posted my last response. the computer has been sitting on the desktop at idle. so for about 6 hours now. has yet to shut off. and yes when it shuts down, theres no warning, just Boom, off. but it restarts itself. I dont have to turn it back on. is there a way to test a mobo or PSU? id hate to start replacing parts and wasting money.
