I personally prefer downloading it because it stays in origin, steam, uplay etc. Also you get the game at 12:01am most of the time. Sometimes with the disc you have to download the game anyway.

Hard drives have faster read/write times than any CD/blu-ray device, so yes. Not to say that your game would lag otherwise, but it would load faster off an HDD/SSD.

Pre-download the game. You dont have to go anywhere, dont have to stand in line and cannot lose a disk.

Downloading the games is the new way to go.

As a con to downloading, the servers might get overloaded on release day. But that does not deter me from downloading all my games. :)

So given that fact, due to Steam's unreliable servers, is it best to download Gauntlet at the end of October instead of next week's release date? I'm anticipating widespread Steam outages next week since Gauntlet is a highly-anticipated game. If this was an Origin game, then it would be a whole different situation since EA's servers are WWWAAAAAYYYYYY better. So I'm hoping that I could get a retail disc for that game to avoid failed downloads.

I usually go for the disk version when available, just because my internet is unbelievably slow. It can take more than a full day, in rare cases even two days, to download one game if it's large.

Games on disk always install to the HDD anyway, so the game performance will be identical regardless of whether you get a digital version or a disk version. Additionally, disk versions of modern games automatically link to your Steam (or other supported DRM) account once installed, meaning even a disk version will stay in your Origin/Uplay/Steam/whatever account if the disk is somehow lost.

Really the only things to consider are:
1. Will the game take longer for you to download than it'll take for you to drive to a store?
2. Are you one of the people who likes having a physical case, or is it just more clutter?
