single high end card or multiple mid cards

So I was thinking I would get an R9 290 or a 780 and then get a second one in SLI/CrossfireX down the road when they're a bit cheaper. But crossfire/sli is hit and miss for different games. So would it be better to get an R9 295X2 (Titan Z is ridiculously expensive) than get the 2 separate cards

Wait few more weeks and get a single gtx 980 and always try to have single card over dual it works better that way and has less issues. Also cards like 295X2 have dual gpus so if 1 gpu breaks its not a good deal better get 2 separate cards.
