Hi Folks,
I starting my first build after nearly a decade, and I'm starting from scratch. The goal of this computer is to solve CFD solution on an infrequent basis. Hence, I need some power, but not on the order of clusters. I have read a host of reviews, and my goal is to build the machine with ~$1000 and then add components in 6 months.

The workstation I want to put together has the following components (all from Newegg for pricing considerations):
(1) Intel Core i7 5820K Haswell-E (6 cores) = $390
(2) MSI X99S SLI Plus LGA 2011-v3 = $229
(3) Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 = $203
(4) SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal SSD = $180
(5) Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower = $84
(6) LG Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM SATA = $35
(7) Thermaltake TR-700 700W = $60

I do plan on overclocking, so I'm not sure if I picked the right board. Many forums have suggested that Asus X99 Deluxe might be a better board. However it is twice the price, and would cost nearly as much as the CPU. Would it be worth it?

Solution
another thing about the x99 deluxe is that it has a fan card which comes included and a pciexpress m.2 sata card included along with a thermistor sensor you can place anywhere in the case. the fan card lets you control 3 more pwm or 3 pin fans via the bios or the overlocking ai suit software. wayy better than buying a voltage only exteral fan controller for 30 bucks.

its not likely worth the cost increase, provided that MSI board has all the features you're looking for. im also sure it probably supports overclocking, though i havent worked with it and do not know this to be a fact.

one thing i do absolutely know to be a fact, is that the thermaltake PSU youve listed is -total- junk.

a well-built 550w psu has more than enough power for that rig (even with a moderate GPU) and wont risk frying your pretty new hardware.

i considered the msi x99 board as it looked good, and has a lot of features. aslo i belive it can support a big air cooler like the noctua. the x99 deluxe does for sure support the noctua nh-d15 as have the 5820k with 32 gb of ram (crucial no heat spreader) and it doesn't impinge on the graphics card nor the ram. i got my processor and motherbaord from microcenter and they sell the 5820k for $299 and give you $40 off a combo with a processor and motherboard so I got my x99 deluxe mobo for about $360 before tax. the x99 deluxe has really great fan control and overclocking software can't be beat , 1 click and I got my 5820k to 4.35 ghz. also the x99 deluxe has a socket with extra pins called the asus overclocking socket witch suposeded to make overclocking more stable , which is debateabl, but I just love fact that asus is an inovator and trying things other board makers just don't push the envelope. I'd rather go with the lead guys than the ones that are just ok with doing whatever intel tells them to.

Thanks! You sold me on spending the extra $$$'s on the X99 Deluxe. I was also a tad big nervous about the firmware bugs with MSI. The extra features that for overclocking make it a no-brainer. Just placed my order on microcenter. Still surprised that they are SO much cheaper than Newegg. Nice find!

Hey man, I didn't want to sell you on anything, but really just give you the information I had. Which after all my considerations I went with the asus x99 board too so we both must agree. I really must say that the ai suite software from asus is pretty damn good. I tried to install Linux on the 5820k and x99 deluxe and it really sucked b/c the drivers and ai suite software are all for windows. but after being forced to buy windows 7 pro 64 bit. I must say I am really happy with my decision to go with the x99 deluxe. I also got my raid mode to work and it's even better yet. I have a Silverstone temjin tj04-e which was released in 2012 or so but I love the case and I was able to jerry-rig the extra fan card to the back of it behind the motherboard on a couple of standoff slots being careful not to short out my motherboard from the back. the length of the holes in the fan card are basically the same for the holes for a 5.25in drive bay if you want to put it in there but it also happened to be the length of the holes for a micro atx and a regular atx motherboard stand off difference which is how I was able to fasten it. I happen to be using all my 5.25 in bays for random stuff like a drawer and a fan intake and a dvd rom drive so I had none left. The manual doesn't say squat about how to mount it so might have to be creative like I was or just try the included screws and 90 degree parts for the 5.25 in bay.

one other minor note, my nh-d15 noctua cooler seems to almost block the vertical m.2 sata slot. This is something I couldn't have imagined but the nh-d15 is HUGE. it clears my video card which is in the first pci express slot (most idea location ) by about 4mm! the video card clearance was my main concern! but I might still be able to use the m.2 slot it's just soo close , I can't try it since I don't have one of those drives. also asus included the extra pci express m.2 card so worst case scenario I could put my m.2 drive there if I had to b/c of the cooler blocking it. now I'm worried about the 28 lanes.... but since I only have one x16 graphics card (gtx 780 evga 6gb acx overclocked) I still have 12 more lanes to play with..

Those are about the only things I can tell you really aren't posted anywhere else as far as I know. Oh yeah more .... it only comes with a 3 way sli bridge. ( I bleive you can use that same bridge for 2 way sli) idk but it really doesn't give you a lot in the way for bridges. idc though I'm only going single gpu.

as far as power supplies I went with the corsair 860i b/c it's short and sweet. by short I mean 160mm I believe don't quote me on that exact number, but.... it is short enough I was able to use the 6 2.5 in drive bay adapater that came with my temjin tj04-e. and it's got 860 digital watts platinum rated. and you can monitor it with corsair link (not the greatest) but still something other guys aren't offering. it seems I put out like 200-300watts at the most. or that is what the corsair link is telling me . that is at idle btw. so you know I'd recommend the corsair ax 860i as well. it's working great for me.

one final thing I can't figure out is if the board has a T1 sensor. it seems the software thinks it does, but it reports as a N/A and I cannot find it on the board. it does report the 3 extra sensors that you get on the fan card, but the T1 sensor is a mystery to me.

good luck

Thanks for the detailed response! I have modified my originally build and have placed orders for all the parts:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/63xjvK

I did have a few questions:
I'm buying 2x8GB RAM. However this MB has 4 channels. I don't want to buy 4x4GB since I will be upgrading when the price drops. Would I see a performance/stability decrease since this MB supports 4 channels simultaneously.

I opted for the Corsair 300R ATX mid case since both my CPU cooler and PSU were made by Corsair, and I am assuming compatibility. Bad assumption? Would I need to install the fans on the outside?

Basic question: Since this MB does not have integrated video, do you NEED a graphics adapter to even get the monitor to turn on?

Many thanks!

ccoutinh,

I don't know what kind of performance / stability decrease if you only got 2 sticks. I went with 4 sticks 8gb each, because I didn't know either and wanted to be safe that I got quad channel performance and didn't want to worry about trying to get 2 more matching sticks in the future when ddr4 prices drop a little. To me it's a bet either way and I'm thinking 2 sticks at 8gb would work just fine. If you check asus website with qvl (qualified vendors list) for the x99-deluxe motherboard for memory compatibility it would show you which sticks work in 1 way. 2 way, and 4 way and 8 way configs.

http://www.service.asus.com/#!downloads/c1wax

check that site for the compatibility with your specific ram.

I don't know anything about the corsair 300r. but I think corsair makes good cases in general and if your parts fit then should be good. I got the Silverstone temjin tj04-e and I love it for my needs. I really think it's the best case out there and I looked at every one I could look at over the past year.

I am pretty sure you need a discrete ( separate ) video card just to get the monitor to show something. this is the x99 chipset and that means you have to buy a graphics card or you won't see anything at all on your monitor. if you wait a month I believe NVidia is releasing the 880 and 870 soon , I have also heard these future cards being referred to as 970 and 980 b/c they want to be fancy and skip the eight hundred series why?? just so they don't make sense I guess.

right now the 770 and 780 look to be on sale b/c of the future cards releases so you might get a deal ... I got the 6gb evga gtx 780 for like 550 and it included a game (boarder land 2) which I have yet to download and am looking into right now.

ok I went over your selections and I think it's pretty good.

I can tell you what I did in general.

Silverstone temjin tj04-e it was 149 on amazon but I got a 15 rebate so $134. and yes I actually did get the rebate in the mail 7 weeks later.

I got 5820k 299 microcenter

x99 deluxe 360 microcenter

pny 240gb ssd it was 104 but I got a rebate of 20 which I'm still waiting for but just sent out last week

I got noctua nhd-15 air cooler it was on sale at ncix for like 74 but I bought 14 dollar usb keyboard and mouse combo Logitech and a ide/pata converter to sata for a total 100 so I could get free shipping labor day weekend.

btw you will need usb keyboard and mouse which is the biggest drawback of the x99 board --I only had a ps2 keyboard and mouse which I think is better but the x99 deluxe only has usb imports for that and I think converters for those are crap.

I bought a piece of oak wood 15 bucks at home depot which my cousin routed so I could put the case on the floor and have cold air intake from the bottom and feed the psu. this wood thing really looks neat, much better than I thought. plus my cousin is like a genious at wood working ( who doesn't like to work with their wood). it also has a slot cut out for the psu air intake on the bottom. and keeps it from becoming a carpt vaccume cleaner.

I got a bunch of fans including the ultra kaze scythe super loud but works well with the asus fan control software, herperborea pwm fan from rosewill 140mm. a yate loon 120 cm 3 pin, another 3pin 80mm delta fan I got of my 1999 hp computer,

I got a 5.25 in drawer so I could put usb keys and other junk in the drawer. 12 bucks or so

32 gb of crucial ddr4 4x8gb 2133 ram. no heat spreader ugly green pcb. 409 dollars newegg. btw my case has no window, just all black sides. works for my taste.

yeah and the gtx 780 550 dollars new egg. evga acx 6gb ram overclocked.

corsair ax860i 200 amazon, but they gave me the euro version with 3 prongs euro outlet plug and I complained and they gave me 40 dollar credit which I then bought a huge guage 14 or 13 guage us version wire for like 8 bucks on amazon. so I made out well there.

I recycled a bunch of drives from previous computers my December 2004 dell and my 1999 hp. one of them was a pata drive and put them in it.

overall I think it was about 2500 give or take.

lol I decided to do a pcpart picker build to make it easy for you. the prices I paid were different as I shopped around hard and had a long to plan buy parts as I waited for x99. here is the link.. it may still be pending approvoval at pc part picker
