Hello - I have a Transcent 1 TB store jet that suddenly stopped working. It makes a faint sound when I plug it back in, like a dying beeping sound. The light on the button does not come on and it is not recognized when plugged into my Mac (either my laptop or my desktop, I've tried both). Is it toast? Is there any hope of recovering the data?? It's a "rugged" external hard drive so it should be ok to be dropped etc, although I don't know if it was dropped it was handled by my toddler once or twice. Help please! Thank you.

Hey guys. Sorry to have to say it but the drive might be failing or already failed completely. If it's making any kind of unusual sounds or noises, it usually means that things are not going well. You've already tried it on different computers and USB ports, you should also try another USB cable cause this one might have gone faulty (remember it should be not longer than 12"). If that's not the case I'd recommend that you try a data recovery company.
Here's a link with info on HDD noises/sounds: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/568/

Hope that helps.

actually the sound I'm hearing from mine is a fast beeping sound for around 3-4 seconds then gone and also the blue light indicator is not showing anymore. Tried connecting it to different laptops and desktop but still doesn't work..??

Beeping sounds usually indicate hardware failure and it is possible that it is due to lack of power, although it sounds a bit strange that this would happen on different computers. You could try an externally powered USB hub or another USB cable (because the one you are using might have gone faulty) to see if it works. If nothing works for you I suggest that you try a data recovery company (if you have important data on the drive) and RMA if it's still under warranty.
