Computer powering on intermittently

Hey all, I've always come to this website for great advice! This is my first time posting, however, because I couldn't quite find an answer to my strange situation:

When I get home from work and my computer has been off for a while, I power on my computer. It begins to power on, but after about 2 seconds, the PSU makes a click sound, and the system shuts off (beeps have not yet been heard from the motherboard). It then automatically continues to do this until I hit the switch on the power supply to shut it off.

I let it sit for about 10 minutes or so while I sit here angrily staring at my computer, then I try again. It now starts and runs for about 20 minutes, then shuts off and begins the cycle of trying to turn on again.

I repeat the angry staring at the computer for another 10 minutes or so, and this time it stays powered on until I shut it off at the end of the night. To make sure no connections were loose, i shook my computer quite hard while it was running. It seemed fine.

I welcome any suggestions! I built the computer about 9 months ago and just recently i switched from an antec HCG 850w to what I have listed below. Everything was working fine for about a week. Here are my specs (nothing is overclocked):

Case: Antec 1100
PSU: Corsair AX860i
GPU: 2x NVIDIA 780ti w/ SLI bridge
Processor: Intel 4930k
RAM: 2x 8GB Patriot Viper 3
Motherboard: EVGA X79 classified
OS: Win 7 Professional
Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H80i

Thanks again!

Thanks for the quick response :) I seriously appreciate the help. Malwarebytes is coming back clean as well as chkdsk on all drives.

Here's the readings from HWInfo:

Your GPUs are running OK.

Your power supply voltages seem low eg 3.3v reading 3.184, 5V reading 4.877, 12V reading 11.889
Nothing serious. Just odd. Can you double check 12v, 5v and 3.3v readings from bios/uefi? (Comes on a disk with your motherboard)

Also core 0 had a 0.000V reading. Again odd. Have you had any problems at all with your cpu or motherboard cpu socket?

At this stage, I'm almost thinking there's something screwy with your motherboard. Is the bios up to date? (needs to be for a 4930k)

Hmmm, I haven't had any problems until now, but I'll download the most recent BIOS release and throw it on there. I'll post the results in a day or two when I know. Thanks!

Updating the BIOS hasn't changed anything, but your earlier comments did lead me to a strange solution. I may have a defective power supply after all.

The corsair AX860i comes with a self-test button on it. Apparently pressing that allows my computer to be booted up normally... I'm not really sure why. I might call customer support about that one.

It hasn't solved the fact that core #0 is occasionally hitting 0.000 volts though even after the BIOS update. I'm going to see if I can borrow a known good power supply to compare all this against.

Thanks again for your help

Sorry for not posting my follow up earlier! The issue ended up being with PSU. There was some sort of issue going on with the self-test button and I had to have a warranty replacement done. Once I got the new PSU, the problem never happened again.

The reason I didn't want to consider the PSU the issue was that this AX860i was literally brand new out of the box that I bought because my other PSU had to be sent in for a warranty replacement. Talk about bad luck! Two bad PSUs in a row.

This sort of things happen more often than not but who likes to document these sort of minor issues? I state minor since people would think more than 5 times to catch a 860W reliable unit to be faulty :p but it happens and I've had a couple of hardware not work straight out of the box.

Nevertheless, its good to know you've found closure and the solution to your issue. Would you mind if I close this thread?
