Windows update problems

Hi I recently did a few critical windows updates and ever since my computer has been acting very weirdly/slow. After the update, I can no longer open control panel (it just freezes and i cant do anything to it, only way to close it is to refresh windows explorer). Whenever I press the settings button in the lower right corner (windows 8) it just closes and nothing happens. When I go to the "This PC" tab it takes about a minute to show my drives and folders. And the worst thing is that the audio no longer works, it just has a red cross over the speaker icon like when it is muted, when I click on it the troubleshooter opens and says that "One or more audio service isn't running", I have gone into services.msc and when I try to start the audio service it fails to do so. I have tried doing a system restore to a point of a few days ago but after the restart it says that the restore failed and that my C:/ drive may be corrupted (I don't think that it is, I still have all my files and folders and can access it easily). I have tried to do a windows 8 repair from the disc but when I enter my product key the program becomes unresponsive. I have done a full computer virus scan which showed nothing.

Any ideas?

Your prob (with the sound not working), sounds similar to what I fixed on someones PC last week.

When I tried to start the Windows audio service (like you) it wouldn't start. It said Endpoint is a duplicate. And when I chose troubleshoot for the audio it kept freezing.

The cause was AVG. Is this installed?? If it is uninstall it.

And like you, control Panel on the PC I fixed was slow to open / it was also blank.

Was / or is your control panel blank / empty??

On the PC I fixed, Iobit Malware fighter was also installed. I found that Windows defender wouldn't start. Its service had stopped. I tried to start it, it said something like it was corrupt and had a dodgy digital signature.

After like 1/2 an hour later, I found out that this Iobit program was the cause (why Windows defender wouldn't start).

So I removed it. And things went back to normal. And Windows defender started working again

Hi yes I just uninstalled AVG but it still won't start. When I press start it says "Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on local computer. Error 0x800706cc: The endpoint is a duplicate."

I also just noticed that it won't restart the computer, it just stays on the restarting page forever and I have to restart it by holding the power button.

Thats the exact / same error I saw / fixed. Depending on the version of AVG that was installed, use its removal tool...

From here. http://www.avg.com/au-en/utilities

Make sure you select the right version and the right bits (32 or 64 bit). Then reboot. That should fix the sound

Hi I tried the uninstaller and it didn't seem to fix the sound issue, I am going to backup all my files and then do a full windows reinstall. Is there a way I can backup my files without the OS aswell? When I restore my backups I don't want any broken windows files along with them.

Did you try and start the service again to see if it started??

I would just copy things like documents and contacts if you want them to a flash drive. Then do a clean install

Sorry another thing, If I were to to just copy my entire hard drive and then restored everything from it to my freshly installed computer. Would that reinstall any of the bad files that are causing my problems now?

No it may not boot properly, and it'd probably be like now the sound wont work. It'd be better if you copy what you want to a flash drive. And reformat / do a clean install

Hi I just realised that I may have cancelled a windows automatic update the night before I noticed all these problems. Is there a way to fix a cancelled update easily?

Shouldnt have installed if it was cancelled. If you know what the KB was you can uninstall it thru windowsupdate / view update history. Then click on installed updates

If you've uninstalled AVG and used its removal tool try this

Go to C:\windows\system32\drivers folder. Delete everything with the word AVG in it then reboot. See what happens

Or if you want put teamviewer on this www.teamviewer.com install it then send me in a PM the ID and password it gives you. I could have a look from here., Dont worry you'll see what I'm doing

(Windows 8.1)
Hey fellas. I had the same problem. The thing was that my antiv "AVG" was thinking special files of mine were viruses which quarantined them. This caused many service of mine to fail resulting with me not able to open many programs such as control panel and my pc was running very slow plus my audio was completely gone. Ever time I tried pressing on the audio thing on the bottom right of the screen its went to a trouble shooter saying that more than 1 audio service wasnt working and I need two audio services for it to work. I researched many way to fix my problem, For example changing the log on opitions in the audio services but nothing seemed to work!. I found that people were going into the virus vault of the AVG anti virus and restoreing the quarantined files. I also tried this but there was no result! So what I done was:

Pressed the windows button and pressed R. what this will do will start the Run App. In this window you need to type "rstrui.exe" this will take you to system restore. once done select to a time which was before your LAST ANTIVIRUS SCAN and or/ the time of scan you think done the damage. Once you sort all of that out and the computer restarts it self and starts restoring UNINSTALL AVG RIGHT AWAY!!. once you have done that restart once more and all all of you audio problems/service will be all fixed and your computer will become alot more faster than before.'

Sorry for the long writing. I hope this helps. FU AVG!

I'm having the same problems (Control Panel is blank, sound doesn't work, etc., and I've got AVG 2014 installed. Unfortunately, I can't even get AVG to uninstall. When I try with their removal tool, it hangs at "INFO WSC object attached". and won't open a window when I try and uninstall through Windows remove program. Any ideas? Thanks!
