W7 64 bit Ultimate and using AMOEI Backupper Standard 2

Backing up to ethernet connected NAS drive.

I created a backup of a data partition, (383 GB) ... was amazed that it took more than 10 Hrs. and the backup file was actually 6GB larger at 389 GB .... thought the backup would at least be compressed.

Then on next back up - tried incremental backup ... expected that it would be much faster, as it only had to copy across the difference .... it took more than 10 Hrs and back up file again 5 GB larger than original.

Unless I am missing something, I would be better to simply drag the contents of partition to my external drive

# It would be mush faster
# Resulting file size would be no larger

Due to file sizes saving multiple historical backups is impossible

It seems using using AOMEI Backupper has gained me nothing, am I doing something wrong ?

All settings are default.
It is set to 'normal' compression - (yet actually makes files larger)

Solution

Hi again, sargan!

This is actually a common issue when the backup software creates a backup image.
The archive size depends on what kind of files you are backing up and it also depends on the backup settings.
Basically it backs up every change and you end up with multiple versions of the same files, which can explain the 5-6 GB larger backup image.
If you’ve picked the Fast Incremental backup method...
Hey, sargan!

I'd suggest to try with a different back-up software.
There are plenty to choose from. I personally like Acronis True Image: http://www.acronis.com/en-us/
What is the extension of this 5GB larger file you are speaking of?
There are some file formats that can be bigger because they have their own internal way of structuring and packing the data which may result in bigger file size, even though the files are completely identical.
I'd change the software and then test the drives.
If the problem persists, you might have a bigger issue on your hands concerning the HDDs, cables or connection of your systems in general.

Keep me posted! :)

I only recently moved to this as it was rated as best free backup software (previoulsy used Windows built in)

Acronis is not free. (I think)

The files extension for the image is name.adi
The point I was trying to describe is that the partition is 383 GB when I do teh backup the single backup file with .adi extension is 389GB

If you’ve picked the Fast Incremental backup method; there are files that change constantly, and will increase the size of your image as well.
A drag-and-drop is also a solution for your data. As for the system files you can use Windows System backup as well:

Hope this helps you! :)

Hello,

As you said you are trying to make an back-up on your pc. And this created backup file bigger then original. Back up file size should be small then the original. Other then using backup software's you can contact to the data backup service provider they can explain you better about your pc's problem and solve this problem.

Thnks regards.....
