GTX 900 Series? Or stick with the 700s?

I recently sold my GTX 760 a month ago, and now I'm planning on getting a new card again maybe around late September to mid-October.

I'm looking at the upcoming GTX 900 series, specifically the 970, but I'm quite disappointed with the leaked specs. I'm eyeing the 970 with the expectation that it can at least match the 780, just like how the 770 matched the 680. But it turns out that the 970 is just a tad bit faster than the 770. Or maybe I just don't know how to read and understand the specs? But based from what I've read in other forums, some people say that the 970's 4GB/256-bit simply doesn't cut it. But there are others saying that it can go head to head with a 780, because it's memory is more efficient? Please enlighten me on this.

My other alternatives would be a custom-cooled R9 290, or a reference 780. I'll be gaming on a 1080p monitor, and would like to have a GPU that can stay with me for the long haul (3 to 4 years max).

No, latest benchmark in 3D11 shows that 970 scores X4897. Titan (first one) is around 5000. That's not bad, faster than 780. I say wait for offical review then deside.

If not R9 290 is a great choice, almost as fast, quite cheaper.

Those leaked specs cannot always be trusted. And specs are just half the story. Best wait and see, that's if you are patient enough.

From what I can gather the 970 will land somewhere close to the 780, perhaps even a little above it. Also, the price is looking to be $300-350. That price alone makes it worth waiting for I think.

In any case, just wait 3 days for the specs to become official and for reviews/benchmarks to come out. You can always choose a 770 at that point if the 900s disappoint.

They released yesterday actually. Here's Tom's review: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-97...

The 970 is a steal.

Well if you're looking for a card that will stick with you for the "long haul," it simply doesn't exist. Games are becoming more demanding and hardware becomes inferior rather quickly. The Maxwell cards are merely 700 series performance with lower power consumption. The next big performance jump will happen next year, starting with the Titan II. We'll probably get a gaming card of the same chip a few months later (just like 780 was to Titan). I'm looking at the 900 series as an upgrade for 600 series owners and earlier.
