I have a NetGear Powerline Ethernet Adapter with a extension. (It plugs into the wall but has the same power port so you don't lose an outlet.) My router is about 80-100 feet away and whenever I plug in both ends they show up orange on the power line. I tried it in the same room as were it was plugged in and got fantastic speeds. Then I moved it to were I wanted and it was orange and I was getting 2 Mbps compared to 75 in the other room. Is there something wrong with the adapter (I bought them about 2 and a half years ago.) But if they are 80-100 feet room by room shouldn't they work?

Typical home electric panels have 2 120-volt 'legs' (or, 2 rows of circuit breakers).

I suspect the circuit breaker for the second room is on the opposite side of the panel from the breaker of the first room, thus reducing your speed. In fact in limited instances, 'opposite' circuits sometimes refuse to communicate between powerline adapters.

If this is the case for you there may be a fix, but it typically requires a licensed electrician ...

If I were to hire a electrician what would he do, how much would it cost, and will it screw up my house wiring?
