hi guys im overclocking a g3258 and cant get anything stable above 4.2ghz. i also tried copying oc guides exactly. one from anandtech and one from ncix techtips video by linus and still no success.

my question is im still using my onboard graphics cause i plan to buy my gpu next week. is there any way that affects my oc potential? is that the reason why i cant go above 4.2? or is it my mobo Asus b85 g43 gaming ( but some h81 boards and other b85 boards got 4.5 and higher) Or the chip i got isnt just a good one? thanks!

May be either of those things you listed, or all combined. Your chip probably wants more voltage for higher clock speeds, but the motherboard can't deliver. It may also be that the iGPU limits overclocking potential without getting more voltage, back to point one. Or, you simply didn't get an as well chip as others.

I'd guess on all or few of them combined, leaning towards the motherboard.
However, 4.2 or 4.5ghz isn't going to brutaly matter in performance. On the bright side, you'll save some $ on your power bill and the cpu won't run as hot.

I agree with DubbleClick. Those Eco mobos are limited in the amount of voltage that can be adjusted, but with that said it's not really a good idea to go above 1.3v on a cheap mobo anyway. There is also a chance you didn't win the silicon lottery, but actually 4.2 on the G3258 is a solid overclock.

Try bolting on an Evo 212 over the stick cooler. That could help you get to 4.4 or 4.5. Anything over that usually requires a good Z97 mobo and solid air cooling at least.
