Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how well this would work. I sold my SSD because I needed some money, but I have an old (7 years) SATA 2 mech drive and a 64gb USB 3.0 flash drive. I've tried the mechanical drive, and it's pretty difficult dealing with slow downs after using an SSD for awhile. Would use the 3.0 drive improve the speeds of launching programs, and just responsiveness?

Solution
Yes, both will have improved performance. The actual performance going from the USB3 drive will depend on whether it's connected in a USB2.0 or 3.0 port. It also depends on how fast the USB drive is, some perform better than others.

You can install the OS and boot off of the flash drive. This is actually very common for hypervisors such as vmware.
Another easy solution is to use the drive for readyboost and maybe the paging file. You are going to run into speed issues with the USB drive when it starts to fill up.

Thank you, but will it be noticeably faster than an old SATA 2 drive?
