Hi! I've been having an issues over the last two or so weeks that's getting progressively worse. (or so it seems to me) Whenever I play a game online my internet connect speed will randomly and suddenly slow to a crawl for a few seconds then catch right back up again. This causes lag spikes that drive my ping from 30 to the hundreds, or every above a thousand. It can even disconnect me from the game completely, just to come right back.

I have a Netgear AC1600 model R6250
A Arris 820a modem
A Hawking HD450 Dual-Band WI-s450N USB adapter
and I have timewarner.

I'm one floor up above the router. I should also mention that the router was working great for the first two months I've had it. I also used to have a less powerful router two floors down and although it wasn't as fast, it was at least stable.

Wireless radios are designed to work best on the horizontal plane. You can usually get a little better signal on the vertical by tilting the antennas back at like a 25degree angle. It looks like, though, your router does not have external antennas. Which band are you using, 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz? The 2.4Ghz will have less throughput but will likely give you a better signal. For online games you do not need much bandwidth, but you do need a stable, low latency connection (though if your 2.4Ghz is used by many other devices, or there is interference, it may not be a good option).

I'm using the 5Ghz signal right now. There's a lot of users that use the 2.4GHz signal, I think only some phones use the 5Ghz. I've also tried switching between signals and it doesn't make a noticeable difference, though it has been awhile since I tried 2.4Ghz, so I'll do that and test it real quick. I also just noticed that I have my usb adapter running in 5Ghz only mode, but it was connected to a signal that had the SSID of the 2.4Ghz signal. I know I set up different SSIDs for the two signals so I'm going to look into that real quick as well.

update: It's strange. I have my usb adapter now in 2.4+5Ghz mode but it doesn't seem to see the 5Ghz signal. I can see it on my phone so I know it's being broadcast and is usable. Either way, I switched on 2.4Ghz mode and tried that signal, it still has the same problems.
