so i bought this brand new r9 285x adn when i installed it in the system everything seemed to work fine but what whas odd tough is that when i tryed msi afterburner it could not detect the gpu but it was still putting out an image so i checked the device manager and for some reason it was not there buut instead it told me that the monitor was running on microsoft basic display port adapter. i tried reinstalling the drivers from amd i tried the drivers from the disk i even tried the windows problem solver which told me that certain hardware changes where not detected it gave me no solution (like always). the bios was not much help as the dell bios is super limited, i ran the hardware failure detector thing wich said every thing was working fine i don't know what to do now also the super overclock button on the card worked it turned blue when i pressed it so the card is probably not dead i checked the power suplly wich has 430 max wich i think should be plenty for this system
specs:
cpu: 3770
8 gigs ram
r9 285x previously: amd 7570
seagate barracuda 1 tb
dell branded motherboard and powersuply
windows 8.1 x64

Need more info on the motherboard and power supply. Give us a model number for both and a wattage rating for the power supply.

You need a good quality 500+ watt PSU for that video card. That Dell PSU will not cut it.

do you think that is the cause of this problem? because shouldn't it at least be detected?

in the end i solved it by forcing the drivers of 200 series on the display adapter and magicly it was detected for some reason
