is there a way for my kids to use my printer, through the net, even though they live in different citys. they both live away from home, but still rely on my printer and some of my files , like photos.
so i want to know if i can basically set up a wan or something similar that will let them file share, use the printer without havign to keep coming over. as much as i love seeing them, its a apin in the arse for them

So how do they get the print jobs once they've printed? They still come over?

You can setup what is called a VPN network that will allow them to connect to your home network and access files and printers. You will need either a vpn firewall or a router that supports VPN. If you are resonabily tech savy most routers firmware can be upgraded to DD-WRT or Tomato firmware that will then give you the ability to setup the VPN connection at the router.

You could also just use a program like teamviewer to remote desktop to a computer that has printer access.

Check Google Cloud Print. You will need a computer at home constantly running for this to work, though.

Google Cloud print does not allow him to share files like he also wants.
