Hi,
I bought a custom build computer off of a kid. I overclocked the cpu from 3.6 GHz 4.0 GHz. I have been playing games on it for a while now, and they were running very smoothly. One day I wake up and realize that i was staying below 35 fps when i normally achieve over 60. I checked AMD Overdrive and that showed the CPU has been running at a steady 1.4 GHz, and would not go even close to 3 GHz. So, I turned down the overclock on Overdrive to 3.6 GHz again, and it changed the CPU speed for about a minute before it started dropping back down to 1.4 GHz again. It is a very noticeable drop I do with everything on my computer now. Everything is laggy. I have heard that it might be a PSU problem, but I am not sure, and I want some more feedback before I just go and start buying/replacing items on my computer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

CPU: AMD FX-4100 Quad-Core
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3
4x4Gb or 16 Gb of RAM
Allied ATX 300w Switching Power Supply
AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series

Looks like thermal throttling to me. Check your temperatures.

I agree its a power issue, that psu has been under some serious strain!!!

yea, all the online websites that determine how big the power supply needs to be says it needs 300w or a little more.

Not just more power, more quality power, as in bronze or silver rated, needs to be guaranteed not to explode in your face.

That's better. But just to be sure, keep digging. Maybe you get more for your money.

That rating is only for efficiency and does not cover the quality and 'safety' of the PSU. There are bronze and silvers that have failed the tests of a good quality PSU.

I doubt that psu even has a 20+4 connector or a 4+4 either. Get rid of it before you ruin your rig.
