Network problems at work

I work in a somewhat remote area that I live in and have limited cell phone access, otherwise I would use my phone as a hot spot. My issue is that my work provides a computer for staff to use. It has restricted access like most work networks, I was informed by a colleague that he worked with someone that set up an unrestricted network using the companies ethernet cable, placing his wireless router on the network and then connecting another ethernet cable to the work computer. II am up at work for 96 hours at a time and a lot of it is downtime. I wouldn't mind playing an online game or skyping with the lady back at home. Is there a way to set up an unrestricted network using my router? if so, how does one go about doing so?

I don't believe we are allowed to help you bypass the restrictions set on your device by your company. Even if it were I would not assist you.

Not only is it against forum rules to help you bypass any password or network security measures, but many of us are in the positions where we setup such restrictions so we are not going to help people around them.

Talk to your IT staff and see if they are willing to allow this or if they wouldn't mind allowing giving you remote access to your home computer.

Bypassing network security is a bad idea, so you won't find help in doing it here. Most places might fire you on the spot for doing so.

But if you can get any signal at all on your phone, there are options. If you have a port for an external antenna (getting rare), you can try getting a high-gain antenna and a can of potato crisps (Pringles) and make a "cantenna" that lets you aim it towards the towers to get a stronger signal. Some carriers also offer dedicated hotspots that have an external antenna port.

I agree will all of them as well talk to you IT staff, see if they will allow you access to the things you want. They might have to get approval for it but it can't hurt to ask. I always get people asking me to unblock things, if I know its something crazy I say I can't right off the bat or if it is something not to bad I will say I will check into it for you and let you know. We are not mean people just ask you IT staff.

I appreciate where you are coming from with this situation and understand. Thank you for the time you took to reply. I don't expect anyone to break any rules and apologize for breaking the rules myself.

1) your 'colleague' just got himself on the short list to be fired immediately
2) this bypasses the security, now joe someone (say your in Afghanistan, this would be Mr. Taliban) has full access to your company resources. For example the COMPUTER THAT DOES PAYROLL can now be hacked.
3) It is against forum rules to assist in security violations. You need to speak to your supervisor and IT staff to A) get approval for the idea (your using THEIR paid for for gaming / skype - just like if someone kept taking money out of your wallet to PAY for phone call back to the lady at home ) B) how they will implement it to NOT bypass security.

FYI: Per your CONTRACT (even a full time employee signs documents to be 'hired') this is covered as a IMMEDIATE reason to be fired, no matter your circumstances (96 hours, away from home, blah blah). If this is a 'sensitive' job, your 'next' job will be asking THIS one why you were fired, and well....
