If you have no personal preference then definetly go for r9 290x is more powerful than the gtx 780 even r9 290 is a bit faster than gtx 780 .

An Example Chart.

I would go with a GTX 780 since you are likely to be a long time user. I say dont go with the R9 290x because AMD does not update their driver every so in often like Nvidia does for new games.

yes Nvidia have better drivers than AMD and yes nvidia update their drivers more frequently than AMD but that doesn't makes any difference in performance.

He is still going to have the same performance either way because he is playing at 1080P. I get 70+ FPS on 1080P with one GTX 780...so why not think about it for the long term.

If you look at that way then getting a gtx 770 or r9 280x is enough they will also give 60+ fps in most of the games in ultra at 1080p.

Yea you can do that too. My little brother is still rocking his GTX 580 at a solid 80FPS on Battlefield 4

Go with the R9 290X if it is cheaper, it can do good 1440p and even 4K in some games. Raw performance is better.

But check the cooling solution, R9 290X require a good cooler to run fast. If its a reference card, avoid it and go with the GTX 780.

I'd say neither.

1. The R9 290 (non-X) is about 95% as fast as the R9 290X, and is 25% cheaper (in the US anyway). Plus, with the right cooler, you can probably overclock to R9 290X speeds anyway.

2. The NVIDIA 900 series is rumored to be announced in 2 days (the 19th). You may want to see what shakes out from that.

Either way, the brand and vendor are important too. The reference (stock) R9's are terrible, but models like the Sapphire Tri-X, or XFX Black Edition are great. For NVIDIA, the EVGA ACX 780 is one of the best.

@Mojojojo: Just because the 780/R9 290X are overkill now, doesn't mean that will be the case in 1-2 years. Might as well go with what you can afford. Also, AMD has gotten a lot better with their driver updates since the R9 series launched.

Not saying they are overkill, im saying to go for a GTX 780 because Nvidia is known to have frequent driver updates even for old gpus, so that people can have a good experience with old gpus.. So if he goes with the GTX 780, in 2018 he will still be up to date with drivers for new games.

I suppose that makes sense, but I'm not sure it makes $120 worth of sense.

it makes sense because if you spend a money on a high-end graphics card now, you wont have to spend money on it for 4 years. plus to save money he can always find good deals on ebay for the GTX 780 if he wishes to buy it from their. http://www.ebay.com/itm/GTX-780-Super-Clocked-3-GB-ACX-...

If I wanted a card to last 4 years, I'd still prioritize performance over the chance of better driver support.

That, and I'd still stress the 2 points I made in my OP.

Careful with ebay, assuming it's available in his country, be sure you're not getting used and the warranty is in-tact.

Drivers doesn't makes a card more strong if he use gtx 780 or r9 290x after 3 - 4 years he will get the same performance by both despite better drivers .

No actually he wont get the optimized performance, if the drivers aren't updated. Some games require updated drivers.

AMD is not in the stone age in 3 -4 years AMD will also have lots of more drivers to support.

Wow all this discussion and only a brief mention of the GTX 980 and 970? There is NO way you should be buying a last generation card just two days before the new cards land. The GTX 970 4GB is supposed to be as fast as a 290X for only $300, all while using much less power and overclocking like crazy.

That was one of my first points actually. :p

If all those leaks are correct, the GTX 970 will cost less than the 780, AND outperform it. If the 750TI is any indication, it will probably do so with a lot less power, noise, and heat as well.
