Just finished building my new computer. I have kind of an odd issue. I plugged in everything and my computer wont boot, after some troubleshooting I found out that if I unplug the 8pin connector on the graphics card with the 6pin still in, it will boot just fine. I have a msi z97-g45 mobo with a asus r9 290 4gb OC and a EVGA 1000w G2.. Power shouldn't be an issue, yes everything is plugged in correctly and I've tried all the pcie ports on the psu.. Let me know if anyone can help! Thanks!!

Solution
Hmmm....maybe a short inside the 8-pin receiver on the GPU side?

I'd give ASUS customer service a call and explain the situation. (Assuming you don't have another 6 & 8-PIN GPU you can compare against.)

What do you mean you tried the 8 pin connector the psu came with?
You used some other one? They are not usually interchangeable....

Buy a meter and start testing the voltages and hope you didnt kill that rail of your rather expensive psu or gpu.
