how do i connect and configure my new r9 290x from powercolor? the unit came with absolutely no instructions. none of the powercolor or amd drivers i've tried to install seem to work.. catalyst fails installation as well with no apparent werror other than "fail".

Solution
1) Power down computer

2) Insert card fully and screw into place (use the top x16 PCIe slot)

3) Monitor attached to card (probably the DVI connector), and power cables attached to graphics card.

4) Start PC.

5) Download latest AMD drivers from AMD's web site and install.

Since you can bootup and see something on the screen it doesn't appear like the card is damaged, so it's probably a software problem.

*You may need to remove the video drivers that are present (Uninstall) and use a driver remover like THIS:

i don't mean to sound ungrateful, but all the 'solutions' i've seen remind me of talking to uSoft. "...have you tried rebooting?..."

the real solution is finding the disconnect between the additional pci power for the card, 1 (and) 3/4 connectors, and the modular power supply. a simple solution would have been a pamphlet photo that said 'power goes here' or some kind of marking on the board-edge that said 'power connection'.

i do really appreciate all those who took the time to try and help.

oh, <sarcasm>and a special thanks goes out toErAnkurPaul who selected the "best solution" on my behalf</sarcasm>.
