There is no Nvidia gfx card that performs as well as the 780 that is cheaper... unless you find a good deal on a used GTX 680 or 690. Would you consider AMD?

Well obviously any card that isn't a GTX 780 won't be able to attain 780 performance levels unless you factor in hefty overclocks. Your best bet to get close to a reference 780 would be a GTX 680/770 that can do over 1200mhz.
