Display Startup Error, Integrated Laptop Screen Black

On startup, my HP G62x-400 native laptop screen is black (totally dead, no faint image). The computer goes through all the motions of booting, only to bluescreen on my external monitor before reaching the login screen. However, when I boot in safe mode or with the graphics card disabled, it will boot normally (again on the external screen).

Every time I start the computer, it's a toss-up as to whether the screen will turn on or not. When it does, it runs normally for at least an hour. When it doesn't, it goes to a bluescreen saying "display adapters failed to load." I've updated my drivers, replaced my fan, checked the display cord connection, checked the backlight (it's fine). The sporadic manifestation of this issue suggests a hardware issue. E.g. the screen is dead, which makes the graphics drivers throw a fit, then crashing the computer.

Any input at all is greatly appreciated.
