With Broadwell coming in the future and the 900 series on the horizon, I am starting to get the upgrade itch. I am currently running an i7-980 and a GTX 470. The system is starting to show its age; however, I am thinking of getting a new GPU and seeing how my performance increases. If the increase is not to my liking, I will be able to at least use the GPU in a new build. I have a PSU to support any high end card. If the performance is to my liking then I will hold off on upgrading for a while longer.

Would I honestly see MUCH of a performance increase to move away from the x58 at this moment? I am just seeking some advice to compliment what I already know (it is time for an upgrade to get PCIe 3 and true USB3 ). I think I need tsomeone to confirm it :p . Most games I can still play at medium or even with some settings on high. I am not looking to get balls to the wall performance, but would like to play with decent settings at 1080p.

x58 is starting to show its age; however, I would definitely pick up a new GPU first and see how you like the performance. If it is to your liking then it will save you some money for the moment and will let you see what comes out in the new future. I would recommend a GPU such as the Nvidia GTX 780 at 1080p. You can get some great deals on it at the moment and it will max out most games at 1080p. With an upgrade to a platform, such as Z97, you would see an improvement with video because of PCIe 3 support and native USB 3. You could also look into PCI storage solutions in the future if you wish as well as Z97 supports it.

As you already have an i7 I assume that probably do some sort of video editing, rendering, etc. If this is the case, I would recommend an i7 4790k if you go with Z97 and still have the budget for a high end video card. Otherwise, if it is going to be used for mostly games, I would go with an i5 4690k. Either one will do you no wrong.
