The title pretty much sums this up. I'm just wondering if I can take my current HDD and transfer it to a new build. Then once the HDD is hooked up, I can format it. How would I go about doing this? I'm about to build my first PC soon and just trying to see if I can save a couple bucks. Is there anything I should look out for, such as compatible SATA connectors with the new motherboard? If it helps, I have a potato HP and wanting to transfer this HDD to a new build.

You could format the drive during the OS installation. Just make sure it is set to boot from the CD/DVD first and pay close attention when it boots as you will need to "Press any key" to get it to boot from the optical drive. You can change the boot priority in the BIOS. If it is a SATA drive then you should have no problem connecting it to the new motherboard.
