I have 2, XFX Radeon DD HD 7970 black edition video cards crossfired , I was looking to upgrade to a single Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X . I have had people tell me that it wouldn't give me any increase in graphics. Looking at the Spec I disagree. What do you guys think is it worthwhile to upgrade to a single R9 290.

No, its not worth the upgrade. The HD 7970's are only a step down from the R9 290. Its not worth it, two 7970s will outperform a single R9 290.
And 2x R9 290x's in crossfire are only like 25% slower than the fired 7970s. They are brilliant graphics cards and still considered high end. Stick with them.

Sorry I made a typo, 2x R9 290's would only be 25% faster than the fired 7970s.
Is a 25% gain worth purchasing two flagship GPU's all over again?

I think you are making the correct decision.
