I was having graphical issues with my ATI Radeon 6990m. I cleaned the heat sinks and fans, also decided to clear up some extra space on my HDD. In the list of programs I saw three Nvidia applications that had been on my computer since I got it. I say to myself "I have an AMD graphics card and software, what do I need these for?" and promptly uninstalled them, now steam simply will not launch anything or I'll get an error saying 'Directx encountered an unrecoverable errror.'
I have tried finding the same nvidia stuff but cannot remember the name and nothing has helped so far, also reinstalled all the AMD stuff too. Any suggestions?

the typical fix for steam problems (for me anyway) is to navigate to the steam folder in program files and delete everything except from steam.exe, steamapps (assuming you want to avoid reinstalling your games) and userdata (sometimes save files are stored here). delete absolutely everything apart from these files/folders.
once deleted simply run the steam.exe and it will re download all of the files. and steam should be ok.

if this fails follow this guide (only if you are unsure on how to verify the integrity of your game's cache) support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335 ------> warning, any mods that you have installed that replace any of the game files will be deleted and will therfore need to be reinstalled

if this failes i am stumped

Thanks to both of you I appreciate the responses, seems like my Directx was the issue. Useful tips nonetheless.
