Help!

I need a super telephoto lens for Nikon. For wildlife and bird photography
. I have narrowed down to two options :

1. Tamron 150-600 f5.6-6.3 (has VR, IS VC etc...., is a zoom, is fairly new)

2. Nikon 300f4 + 1.4x teleconverter.(probably sharper, much lighter and shorter. But old. Like 15 yrs old , no vr...and only 420mm ...

Any advice?

Nikon lenses produce best results on Nikon bodies. Either go with the tele-converter, or get a telephoto Nikon lens.

Thanks for the Reply!

Maybe. But at 420mm, they both are f5.6. And I'm wondering if the extra 200mm length will be helpful, as im shooting full frame. A tele-nikon is WAY too far above my budget unfortunately.

Thanks again!

f5.6 on a telephoto shot is ok as long as you are using a rigid tripod. Even at 300mm you will need a tripod. I took pics of a hawk on our fence at 300mm by resting the lens on a window sill. I did not have time to get the tripod out. I used a 70-300 Nikon zoom lens at 300mm. - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=...

This Nikon zoom lens at this price might be better than the converter.

I have used a 70-300 from Nikon before, but sadly thought the results were average. I'd ideally like something built a bit better . the extra price isnt an issue, up to £800 UK . (maybe $13/1400, not exactly sure).

I see it as: a prime will be sharper, so the 300mm will be the best for a "viable" amount of money.but if I get a zoom, I may as well Go for 600mm as there will be reduced sharpness either way.

I am able to get both lenses for around the same price , so the difference in pricing is not an issue .

That's a lot of money for a lens! I got my Nikon 70-300mm f 4 zoom lens for around $300 a few years ago.

I know it is! Though I need a decent lens as pictures will be printed in a magazine or website. It's a shame nikon don't have as wide a selection as canon do.
