So does a higher refresh rate increase or decrease input lag?

I always thought that if anything it would make it smooth and reduce the lag but I've seen a few people say that it would increase the input lag. I ask because I'm looking to get a new monitor and its 144Hz.

Also would one of those HDMI switch/splitter's increase the input lag? The monitor I'm looking at has only 1 HDMI and I really need 2 so I can have my PS3 and PS4 going into the monitor, I'm going to use the DVI-D for my PC though. I could just switch between the PlayStations by unplugging it but I don't want to wear out the ports and plug-ins changing it every other day ya know?

If you use a switch of some sort to swap between the HDMI sources then you shouldn't notice any additional lag. If it has to go through something like a receiver though then some of them will do some processing of the signal which can cause problems.

The higher the refresh generally the lower the input lag, but it's mostly because the monitors with high refresh rates are also designed as gaming monitors so specifically for low input lag and less processing of the signal before the display. You should just look at reviews of the monitor rather than relying on high refresh rates to also be low input lag monitors.
