My Dell Optiplex 760 only has capacity for 8gb ram. I have four slots. What will the difference be in ram configuration? Four 2gb, two 4gb, or one 8gb? Is there a performance gain either way; which way is best? I have upgraded to a 500gb HHD, retained the Core Duo processor (2.6), and have the Raedon HD 7750 graphics card. The suggested power supply is 400w but I am wanting to surpass that.

I'd go with 2x4GB since the Dell Optiplex is fairly old and probably doesn't support quad-channel memory. So you're better off utilizing dual channel, which will leave you with the best performance.

Run dual channel. i.e 2X4GB. Make sure you get the same RAM. Not two different RAM sticks.

If the Dell is 4 slots with 8GB max then it's limited to 4x2GB, you can't run a 8GB stick and it won't run 2x4GB

Right now it is running two 1gb sticks... there are two white slots (being used) and two black slots (empty). There seems to be mixed opinions on whether to run two 4's or four 2's. The manual cited running two 4's, but was wondering if there was a better way for gaming performance..
**additional question: In my current configuration (500gb hhd, Raedon HD 7750 low profile card (still looking for a 600w psu for it), Core Duo processor (2.6-3.0), which brand and speed of RAM would be the best (question mark button doesn't work on this laptop)..
