im going to build my first pc next Wednesday, and honestly i dont know to much about computers. i want to edit videos and play games like garrys mod and minecraft. my budget is around $800. i also need to get a monitor. any help is appreciated. -Tyler

Solution
I would recommend not buying the monitor yet, since $800 is pretty tight for a workstation. It's not enough to get you a good Workstation GPU. The following solution is a AMD FirePro softmod.

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1220 V3 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H97M-HD3 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($79.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: G.Skill Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($76.50 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($56.98 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: XFX Radeon HD 7870 2GB Video Card ($219.99 @ Newegg)...

The GPU is essentially a W7000. The CPU won't be as good as an FX, but the performance is upped by the extra cache.

yea you aint need overkill PC, considering you also need monitor ETC,for editing videos at that pricepoint (considering monitor ~150-200$) you should lean towards AMD CPU,some moderate gaming card and generally basic set so eh here it goes:

AMD FX-8320E Octo-core, intexpensive as for 8-core,only 95W TDP excellent for multitasking, decent for gaming also
Radeon R9 270X (or R9 270) it may have issues handling the very latest games on ultra, but for games like ones you mentioned, max settings no problem.
WD 1TB 7200RPM HDD
some moderate AM3+ board, my recommendation is GA-970A-UD3P , it is fairly enough to allow your CPU overclock well
8GB RAM, speed (1600,1866,2133 etc) and 2 or 1 stick is really a preference thing, though picking faster RAM and 2 sticks instead of 1 might give you a couple extra FPS.
Aftermarket cooler-go for something basic like coolermaster hyper TX3 EVO or hyper T4
A metal box,a.k.a case to put em together.
