I have a Dell XPS (not sure at the moment) desktop, basically I need to remove 4gbs of ram from the 8gbs it already has. Question is, Will this affect it?

yes, it will leave it with 4 GB less RAM. All work requiring RAM may now suffer more contention for RAM, affecting performance. Unless you can remove 2GB from each channel, it will also drop the computer into Single-channel memory, slowing it a bit more.

If you used integrated graphics that relied on RAM for memory, your machine will sink to its knees and beg for mercy.

Other than that, not ill effects. You may even save a little on electricity.

I don't think I would characterize it QUITE as dire as @Karsten75, but if you only have two DIMMs, then you need to choose which one to remove after checking the users guide. If you have 4 DIMMs then remove every-other-one, not two side by side.

You don't say what the primary uses for this computer are. Web browsing, simple MS Office, shouldn't see a significant impact. Gaming could be impacted. If you notice a slowdown, you may need to scale back the simultaneous things you are running.

"You got to do what you got to do..." If you NEED to remove it, then you CAN do it. Your performance may suffer but it should continue to be functional.
