I only need this *old* computer running Windows 98. A friend gave me her Gateway laptop Solo Pro 9300. She used it to run the same software that I will use it for. She used it for quite awhile and put it away a couple years agowhen she stopped needing it. Not that I have it, I can get it on, windows works fine, all seems okay but neither the floppy nor the d drive work. The floppy does nothing...the d drive, I can see the directory and bring up the file that's on it but it won't play/read a cd that I try to use to install something. The floppy drive is easy to pop out on this computer but it seems odd to me that both floppy and d drive aren't working. They both worked when she packed it away. She had it stored in her house, conditions should have been fine.. I don't mind replacing it if need be but is there a way to tell if that's what I need to do? Now that I think about it though, I can't get the PCMCIA card to work that gives me my second serial port. It also worked fine when she packed it up. She sent me her card...didn't work...and my card that I use currently, same as hers, and it won't work on the Gateway either. Any help would be so appreciated! Thanks.

Boot into the BIOS of the machine by pressing the corresponding key (F1-12, DEL, ENTER etc) and check to see if the devices are read by the motherboard. if they are (which they most likely will be), its most likely a driver issue in windows 9x. if not, do a quick search for your laptop model, and it should provide drivers for certain hardware and applicable BIOS updates if the machine requires it.

Can you provide the make/model of the machine? I, or someone on this forum may be able to point you in the right direction with that information in hand.

It's a Gateway Solo Pro 9300. I took it to a shop and they are still looking at it. The did however say that I couldn't get a wireless adapter for it to get online. On the specs for this computer it says you can buy a wireless adapter. If I can find something that works for that will at least be a step in the right direction. Plus, tonight on yet another computer I'm going to try to run the software in 95 compatibility mode, load it on my xp computer. Thanks for your reply!!
