hi i was wondering for a spare build i have a x58 intel smackover 2. and i was wondering would a i7 950 be of a better quality die slice then the i7 920 or i7 930.

i know the intel 950 is a faster stock chip but i plan to overclock either chip and was wondering if the 950 would get better manual overclocking results then a 930

It is all basically on the same silicon. However, some chips perform better than others and thus get binned as a higher SKU CPU. The 950 is on the same silicon but performed in a stable manner at its "stock" speed. The 920 was not of the same quality so it was binned as a 920 and set to run lower to be stable (still quality but not up to the point where it would be considered for a higher SKU).

You are playing the silicon lottery and it all depends. You could have a 930 that OC's higher than a 950. The 950 may be near its potential at stock speed so there may not be much of an overclock headroom. However, I would recommend the 950 if you can get it a decent choice and see what kind of OC you will get out of it. Even if it is not much, you will still have a chip that is faster at stock speeds than a 930 or 920. It really comes down to price and what kind of a deal you can get. All three chips are great, showing their age, but still good.

They were both Bloomfield cores, so same architecture.
