Would it give me that much more performance if I went with either of those I am using a XFX 7970 and not sure if it would really be worth upgrading.

With AMD FX 6300 and FX 8300 processors and basically any game out there is not a noticeable difference according to what i have read. And based on my limited experience with AMD,; higher Clock speed is more beneficial than 8 cores over 6 cores and 4 cores. That is just how D3D11 is and will be. The FX6300 is just as good as any other AM3+ Socket CPU for gaming . and can Overclock to decent numbers.
What role does your motherboard play? You mentioned a replacement...

EDIT , NOTE: BF4 would be the exception as far using more than 4 cores. Bf3 is said to use 6 cores as well.

Well I was wondering if it would be really worth upgrading any good air coolers to overclock for a mid tower case? I was thinking of going to and i5 sometime in the future but not sure it would be annoying to do all the updates.

Going from a 6 to 8 core will give you an improvement in some of the more modern titles that use multi threaded game applications. I'd also get a hyper 212 evo air cooler and overclock if you can to at least 4.5 ghz to get the maximum improvement. Don't listen to these intel fools. I have a 4770k and i built an 8320 system as well. In real world, you can't tell the difference that much. In the benchmark world, you're looking at a 1000 point difference.

tl;dr if you feel you must upgrade, get an 8350 with a good air cooler (hyper 212 evo) and overclock it. Make sure you have a 990FX mobo like an asus or gigabyte or I wouldn't even bother upgrading. Or you can waste another 500 dollars to change to intel i5 which isn't hyperthreaded and has a lower passmark score than an 8350.
