Windows 8.1 64-bit stuck on 32 bit

I built myself a system on Windows 8.1, and noticed that the majority of my program files were stored under the "Program Files x86" folder. Knowing that this folder is for 32-bit programs, I went and checked my other "Program Files" folder. Very few of my installed applications were listed here, so I decided that I'd probably made a newbie mistake when I set up my system. I have a 64-bit system, with 8gb RAM and Windows 8.1 64-bit installed. Does anyone know why my programs seem to default to install as 32-bit? I will be happy to answer any questions about information I may have forgotten to provide.

Why Does 64-Bit Windows Need a Separate “Program Files (x86)” Folder?

Many Windows programs are still distributed in 32-bit versions by default. 64-bit versions are becoming increasingly available though. Furthermore, many applications that are distributed in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions at the same time will install to the 32-bit installation folder, ergo it is not uncommon to have 64-bit applications in Program Files (x86)
