Hey guys I wanted to ask for a bit of advice. My old PC just died and I am going to build a new one.

Now I will game on 1680x1050 resolution and I really don't have to max out every game out there in terms of AA and such but I want the highest settings possible of course.

My question is will an FX 6300 paired win an r7 265 achieve those goals for the next 1 or 2 years?

I also wondered what do you think about i3 cpu's instead of FX given that there is a much better upgrade path in the future with i5,i7 and broadwell cpu's later on.

Thank you for all your answers up front.

Ok I'll keep it short and sweet:

There're 2 types of cores, logical cores and virtual cores. AMD has 6 logical cores while i3 has 2 logical and 2 virtual.
Fair enough, 6 cores vs 4 that too with greater stock speeds, they should win this easy isn't it?
Nope, its not like that, there're a few more things to look into.

Cores are housed in what we call modules, lower the number of cores in a module, greater the performance. AMD sure has 6 logi cores, but they're housed in 3 modules, meaning 2 cores per module. Each of the 2 cores share the same L2 cache and other resources, thereby giving much less single core performance than the Intel counterparts who have single core per module mindset.

A FX 4 is 2 module, FX 6 is 3 module, FX 8...
In terms of raw performance, i3 wins, in terms of performance after OCing, you can expect a couple more FPS with 6300 in games like BF4. Upgrade wise, AM3+ platform is almost dead, won't be a surprise if AMD does not put any further CPU upgrades on this. LGA1150 is much, much better, as it'll support much better CPUs which FX can't compete with eg i7. Also, H/Z97 MoBos will support 5th gen so it seems like a better buy to me.

The card is fine for comfortable high-ultra gaming on that resolution for a couple years.

Yeah i3 is better in single core performance no doubt but more and more games are using more cores and i3 is still a dual core.

I don't plan to OC the FX 6300.I never do that really. Also is 6350 worth it anyway.I can get it for like 15 euros more?

I forgot to mention that my budget is 500 euros or 650 or so dollars for my new build

Nope, FX 6 does not stand a chance against any i3 in single core performance until OCed. You'd not get desired results with what AMD has tagged 6 core. It has power equivalent of tri core tbh. I can explain the whole lot why even 6 core AMD finds it hard to compete with 'dual' core i3 (don't forget the hyperthreads) on stock, only if you want.

Do you think I should go with an i3 and r7 265 with an z97 mobo and later upgrade my cpu to an i5 or go with fx 6300?

What will give me more performance?

Besides having better single core performance. You'd need an af cooler to OC the FX, Intel can easily compete with single core performance even with OCed FX.

I'd recommend taking the Intel path. Since you won't OC, there's not much where FX can defeat i3. Also, upgrading to i5 will end the competition, its a ton better than any FX 6 on stock. Even better than FX 8.

Thank you man really.I have just one more question. Can you play modern titles with say i3 4330 and r7 265 on my resolution with high-ultra settings?
