just bought a R7 250 for friend
installed it on ASUS m5A97 r2.0
but the fan does not rotate and display doesnt show up
tried the same card on my ASUS H77 m pro
and the card was working fine

i'm able to run an OLD GT 9400 on ASUS m5 a97 R2.0
but the R7 250 doesnt show up
what could b the possible issue?

Solution

You have two different power supplies there, move the one on the H77 board to the system with the a97 that is not working and try it. It may not fix things, but it will reduce one more variable.

It is not a PCIe 2 vs 3 slot issues, the 250 should work with a PCIe 2 slot, I'm pretty sure both 2...

2 or 3 should work with any card. Could be an actual PCIe slot issue since the fan does not even rotate, unless it's the power supply. Put your power supply in the other system and see if that fixes things. If it does, he needs a new power supply.

Not sure what you mean here, you said it was working with one of the motherboards right? Did you just swap motherboards or put the card in another system with the H77? If the card works in one motherboard but not another one in the exact same box, that points to a motherboard issue when paired with that card.

I'll simplify that again
Asus m5 a97 r2.0 is hooked up with cx430
H77 is hooked upto vs450
An HD 7770 with external power connector is working flawlessly with m5 a97 r2.0
But the r7 250 with no power connector is working with h77 but not on m5 a97 r2.0
Is this because pci 2.0 on m5 a97 r2.0 is not providing enough power as pci 3.0 on H77

It is not a PCIe 2 vs 3 slot issues, the 250 should work with a PCIe 2 slot, I'm pretty sure both 2 and 3 have a 75 watt limit. If your 250 is touchy with the spec, it may be the issue. Does it have any power connectors on the card? If yes, even if you don't "have" to use it according to the manual, you may want to.
