Hi all!

I'm planning to assemble a new PC for moderate gaming (mostly older games like CoH and WoW, I don't have that much 'new' games at this point but almost done with school ^^) and designing (Photoshop and InDesign). Pricing total should net me around $1000, so the system should be a bit future-proof and handling above things without any lag and on high performance. I have build PC's in the past, but since the last one was years ago I would love to hear some thoughs from the experts out there.

Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 Advanced Windowed version
Motherboard: MSI H97M-G43
CPU: Intel i5-4690
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 103
Graphics: MSI Radeon R9 280 Gaming 3G
Memory: Kingston HyperX 8 GB DDR3-1600 Kit (HX316C10FK2/8, FURY Blue, 2x 4GB)
PSU: Cooler Master G550M, 550 Watt
SSD: Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1, 256 GB SSD
HD: Western Digital Black, 2 TB SATA 600

As you see I have a non-OC version of the motherboard and CPU since I don't have the need to overcloack. I'm currently working on a AMD athlon X2 dual 4000+ with 2GB of RAM and a Radeon HD6570, so I think the improvement will be imense anyway.

Some things I'm still thinking about
- Does it sounds like a stable system?
- Will the amount of memory be enough, or should an update to 16GB be wise?
- Is the Radeon R9 280 a good price/quality option or should I reconsider other cards?
- Is the 550watt PSU enough or an upgrade to 600/650 needed?

Solution

That looks pretty good except for the cooler. The rest of your parts are of very good quality, so don't get a cheap CPU cooler.

Get at least the CM Hyper 212 Evo.

8 GB of RAM should be sufficient for most users. Only go to 16 GB if you do 3D modeling or video editing/rendering.

Thanks Yogi, sounds reasonable. Since I didn't think of overclocking I haven't looked into the CPU cooler that much. The Hyper212 isn't that expensive though, will switch them on the final build.
