I got a 4790k two days ago along with a new mobo and cooler. At the first attempt my idle temps were a little high (35-39c), and load temps with prime95 were around 85C, so this morning I reseated the h100i heatsink and in doing so found there was too much thermal grease (arctic silver).

I spent some time with rubbing alcohol to remove the grease and put a bb size drop on the center of the cpu lid. Now, I'm a little concerned that the h100i doesn't attach firmly enough (it doesn't feel loose, but it's a far cry from my last cooler with spring tension that really squeezed the heatsink into place).

Now my idle temps are better (29C), but at stock settings prime95 takes me up to 90C. VCore is set to adaptable but seems to be around 1.05v under load.

Do I have too little thermal grease? What should I expect from a 4790k with a h100i running prime95?

Any help is appreciated.

Have you ensured that the pump is working correctly? Keep an ear out and touch the tubes to feel the liquid moving. Also ensure in your bios that the case fan headers are set to 100% since that is how you are powering the pump.
